Vergelegen Estate is the most adversely affected estate of the wineries in the Helderberg region, but is still open for business.

At least 40% of the Vergelegen property has been ravaged by a wildfire.

Vergelegen CEO Don Tooth explains that the wildfire has crossed over to Morgenster Estate and firefighters are battling to keep it away from Lourensford Estate.

He advises that Vergelegen lost a few vineyards and that management will asses the full damage in coming days.

Tooth says that a great deal natural vegetation of renosterveld has been burned in addition to Protea bushes.

According to Tooth, vineyards are unlikely to be affected by smoke taint.
