Dr Kevin Winter from the Future Water Institute at University of Cape Town says the quality and the type of grey water needs to be considered before being used to water vegetables.

He says water coming from the bathroom, such as bath water, should be diluted first and water from the kitchen should be checked for the level of pathogens and grease which might pose some risks.

We should prevent spraying grey water on leafy crops... rather irrigate them at the root so that we don't distribute any pathogens.
