A group of Wits students have developed a prosthetic hand using 3D printing and is estimated to cost R2000. The prosthetic hand will use brain signal to control movement.

Wits engineering lecturer Abdul-Khaaliq Mohamed and Charl Beukes From the Amputee Club of South Africa spoke to 702 host Azania Mosaka about the groundbreaking invention.

Mohamed says the project has been in the works for about three years. He adds that they integrated the prosthetic hand to the body by using signals from the muscles in the upper arm.

If you have an amputee who no longer has form then they'd need to use some sort of muscle from the upper arm.

Mohamed also adds that the prosthetic arm will enable the user to get a sense of what they are feeling through sensory vibration motors, similar to a cell phone vibration. He goes on to say the prosthetic arm will be affordable, easy to use with very little waiting time to manufacture.

Most of the students that have worked on the prosthetic arm are final year engineering students.
