How does the water crisis in Cape Town impact on insurance policies?

Consumer journalist Wendy Knowler has encouraged insurance policy holders and commercial properties to consult with their insurance providers about the impact of water outages.

There have been concerns regarding the impact on fire cover, if there is no water to feed into a fire sprinkler system.

Meanhwile, SA insurer Santam says it will continue to provide insurance cover for solar and/or electric geysers per
policy conditions, following an insured event where the item is ruptured or otherwise irreparably damaged.

Santam's Risk Services head John Melville has encouraged policy holders to try and switch off their geysers during planned periods of water rationing.

He has also urged consumers to ensure that their systems are installed by registered professionals where possible.

Adherence to the design and installation specifications is paramount to ensure cover and Electrical connections and plumbing must be completed or approved by registered professionals.

It's a very tricky time for the insurance industry and consumers around this issue.
