When we're in certain situations it may seem like the end of your world. You're consumed by the moment and circumstances. Stressing out about the situation you're in doesn't help you at all. You're already in the situation, so process it and try your best to let go of the stressor.
Focus on your breathing
Whenever you're in a stressful situation, all you need to do is follow these three steps:
- take five deep breaths, in and out. Your belly should expand with each inhalation
- whenever you exhale, <g class="gr_ gr_142 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="142" data-gr-id="142">visualise</g> the stress leaving your body
- smile, even if you have to fake it. Having a goofy grin on your face will psychologically convince your mind that you're in a good mood
After engaging in the breathing exercise, perform a quick body scan and identify any areas of your body that are tight and tense. To encourage relaxation, touch or massage the tense area to encourage total relaxation.
If you're trying to become more patient (and lose weight) then chew slowly when you're eating. Stuffing food into your mouth will have you eating more food than your hunger requires and will cause a belly ache. Being mindful of the taste, texture and aroma of every dish will help you. Try guessing the ingredients in a dish to help you slow down your chewing. Chewing slowly will also reduce late-night cravings.
Embrace the journey
Focusing on the end result will leave you exhausted. If you're chasing an audacious and ambitious goal, rather split the goal up into mini-goals so that you can celebrate each achievement in the process of achieving your bigger goal. Give yourself positive feedback because this will help increase your patience, stay motivated and will allow you to find joy in the process of achieving your goal.
Look at the bigger picture
If you feel your stress levels rising, take a deep breath and ask yourself these questions.
Will it matter to me...
- next week?
- next month?
- next year?
- in 10 years
Hint: No, it won’t. I bet most of the stuff that stresses you wouldn’t matter the next week (_maybe not even the next day). _Stop agonizing over things you can’t control, because you’re only hurting yourself.
Stop demanding perfection of yourself
You're not perfect and that's okay. Nobody is perfect. Demanding absolute perfection of yourself will only stress you out because it's not possible.
Practice patience on a daily basis
You can practice patience every day by increasing your ability to remain calm and cool in the face of stress, using the following technique:
- the next time you're at the grocery store, get in the longest line
- if you're going to the bank, avoid the drive-through and go inside, instead
- take a long walk through a secluded park or hiking trail
Share this with your friends and family and maybe it will help them manage their stress and practice better patience.
