Triathlete Mhlengi Gwala is scheduled to undergo leg surgery on Wednesday. Gwala was attacked in Durban while training and dragged into a secluded pathway near UKZN.

The perpetrators attempted to cut off his legs with a saw, but apparently fled the scene after noticing a security vehicle driving nearby.

Gwala managed to limp to the main road to get help.

Gwala's friend Sandile spoke to Bongani Bingwa and says the doctors believe his leg will be saved and he will be able to compete again, but the recovery process is a lengthy one.

He says Gwala was climbing a hill when the men came from the side of the road and attacked him.

He is very shocked and he was only worried about his talent because on the 18th he was supposed to go race at the SA champs in Bloemfontein.
