Dr Sarah Fawcett from UCT's Department of Oceanography and a team of 30 people plan to study the ice shelf and marine life of the Larsen C Ice Shelf in the Weddell Sea region of Antarctica in January and February 2019.

Dr Fawcett says the expedition team will be led by the Scot polar research institute, the ship they will be using is owned by the South African government.

The SA Agulhas II is strengthened against the ice, it's capable of moving in ice that is a metres thick and at the same time conducting scientific research.
