One of the best ways to tell if a music video is great, according to award winning TV and Music video Director Tebogo Malope, is when you forget to note the technicalities.

Malope is well known for his contribution to the creative teams behind TV shows IsiBaya, It’s Complicated, as well as having directed the award winning feature film For Love and Broken Bones, and Kwesta's Spirit music video.

He sat down with Azania to talk about his love for visual storytelling.

I can't help but think about the specifics, but if a piece of work is engrossing enough that I forget to look at those technical specifics, then you have nailed something.

A music video like 99 Problems, where I forget that I am actually watching a Jay-Z music video. Where I am like damn, I feel like I am in Brooklyn. That is when the medium becomes fantastic and can be used to its ultimate purpose.

Malope says he always says yes to the right projects as long as they resonate with him.

I work in a space where you deal with briefs a lot, for me music videos are like a clean canvas, here I can say what I want to say, I can say to the culture what I feel is necessary and is pressing. So I will not say yes to a song because it has got a dope artist....
