People love socialising around the breakfast/lunch/dinner table.
When the food is good, the conversation tends to follow.
There’s something special in the interaction of strangers when they share a meal.
It’s the perfect way for people to get to know each other and build friendships.
This fact, and the sacrifices of South African women, is the inspiration behind Roxanne and Naushad Khan’s brainchild Humanity Lunch Table (at the Artscape) - bringing Capetonians together over a hearty warm meal on Women’s Day.
The first Humanity Lunch Table was in 2014.
Last year more than 3000 people attended.
One of the project’s aims is to feed 4000 women and children, for free.
Chicken Biryani, Vegetarian Biryani and Dhal and a variety of cooldrinks are on the menu.
If you would like to volunteer at the event, email Naushad (email@example.com).
The event takes place next Thursday (Women’s Day, 9 August) from 12:00 pm at the Artscape.
There is no cost for those attending the festival.

Pippa Hudson interviewed Naushad (Founder of Next48 Hours) about the event.
For more detail; listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).
It’s a free event. People come from all over. There’s even free transport for people coming from Ceres, Wellington, Stellenbosch… It embraces so many people… it’s the kind of event that bridges divides…
If someone comes to my home for a meal, I’m won’t serve them a hotdog or a sandwich…
It took us 24 hours to raise everything we need… I send one email on a Sunday evening and by Monday afternoon we’re ready to go!
The biggest kitchen in Africa is the Convention Centre, so they raised their hands to cook for us.
Everybody is invited. The men will serve on the day… everybody eats…
We need about 50 volunteers.
There’s a whole series of talks, exhibitors… There’s a free concert… The lunch is free… we start serving by 12, we’ll be done by 2pm.
It’s a holiday, you’ve got free time… it costs you nothing, come and enjoy!
