JOHANNESBURG - The Energy Department has announced that the price of all grades of petrol will go up by 5 cents a litre on Wednesday.

There is no price increase for diesel or illuminating paraffin. The retail price of LPG will also remain unchanged.

The department says this is despite the average international prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin increasing during the period under review.

It says the minister approved the urgent temporary fuel price intervention measure.

Petrol prices have reached an all-time high for the country and there are concerns about inflation.

The department's Robert Maake says: “This is a once-off intervention by the minister of energy to make sure that we provide some relief to motorists as you’ve seen the crude oil price and the rand/dollar exchange rate ... So, the minister has intervened and said the fuel price should not be changed this month so that we can provide some relief to consumers and motorists.”
