He was propelled to fame in 2012 when he appeared on his then-girlfriend, Dineo Ranaka’s reality show.

But five years later, Blaklez has successfully carved out a career for himself as a performer in his own right, proving that he's riding on no-one's coattails.

With three albums under his belt, including the latest, 'Baby Brother', the rap artist, known affectionally by his fans as 'Steve Biko with a mic' is fast establishing himself as one of the country’s most important hip-hop artists.

He caught up with Cape Talk's Sara-Jayne King, to talk music, life and love and fatherhood.

The album [Baby Brother] is very positive, I'm in a very positive space.


What people may not know about the rapper - born Legeso Moiloa - is that in the early days he had his sights set on being a professional soccer player.

But his late mother, Josephine, wasn't too keen.

I was scouted [for a football scholarship] and my mother said, no deal. I was very upset, but she said you have more to offer the world than just being a football player.


In addition to the music, Blaklez is also father to 5-year-old Kopano, who he shares with media personality Dineo Ranaka.

The pair had a very public break-up, but have managed to put the past behind them.

I think she's one of the misunderstood people, but I think people are starting to see her character. She's one human being who cares so much about human beings.


Time is the most precious commodity. We came to the realisation, we have a daughter and time is so precious.


The latest album, Baby Brother, features collaborations with the likes of Cassper Nyovest and Youngsta CPT and is available to download on digital platforms. A CD will be released in November.
