You might be asking yourself what WorldSkills is and how you can become part of the WorldSkills revolution?
Well, if you’re reading this – you’re on the right track.
WorldSkills is a movement that aims to change the lives of young people by means of skills and trades within respective industries. Participation in WorldSkills builds the confidence levels of young people and creates empowerment regarding practical exposure and practical implementation of skills acquired.
There are 80-member countries involved that reach two-thirds of the world’s population.
Each of the member-countries are responsible for promoting vocational education and training within their own country.
Bi-annually then, thousands of these skilled young people from around the world, accompanied by their teachers, coaches and mentors, come together to compete in the skills of their various trades, affording them exposure to a world class standard and the demanding international standards. Collectively, the members offer a unique network for sharing knowledge and experience to world class standards.
In 2017, the National leg of this competition took place in Durban, where the Western Cape team obtained eight Gold, three Silver and five bronze medals. Eight of the 16 participants advanced to the WorldSkills International Competition in Abu Dhabi where one of the WorldSkills South Africa Western Cape members was part of the team challenge who won the gold medal in the Computer Numeric Control (CNC).
“This bears testimony to the fact that the Western Cape is a force to be reckoned with and leading the pack when it comes to skills development in South Africa” says Ebrahim Peters, PADC Chair and WSSA Western Cape Sub-committee member.
The Western Cape has just completed the provincial leg of the competition. The provincial experts are very excited and hard at work in preparing their competitors for the next round – the Nationals to be held in Durban in February 2019 – and thereafter to qualify to be chosen to reach their dream – competing at international level in Kazan, Russia.
The WSSA Western Cape team was announced at a Gala Evening on 4 December 2018.
