26 people died on the Western Cape roads this past weekend.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa says drivers found to be negligent and reckless on the roads should lose their licences.

I think the sentences should be harsher when you get a person who is drunk on our roads. Those persons should not be in possession of a driver's licence. It needs to be taken away.

The department is on patrol 24/7, he says.

He says this weekend saw a record number of drunken driving arrests on Western Cape national roads.

We arrested over 50 drunken drivers. The worst was in Caledon in the Overberg where the driver was five times over the legal limit.
