Capetonians are being told to brace themselves for an intense cold front blowing its way into the Mother City this weekend.

Gale force winds and heavy rain are predicted from Friday afternoon.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of gusts of up to 90km/h and localised flooding.

City departments are on standby and residents are being asked to ensure that all gutters and stormwater channels are clear, and to dig trenches around their property if needed.

Informal settlements on the Cape Flats and the Overberg District are likely to be the worst affected by flooding.

Meanwhile, we're told to expect some snowfall and freezing temperatures over the southern mountains of the province on Friday night into Saturday.

Residents are requested to contact the Public Emergency Communication Centre in cases of emergency by dialing 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
