Gourmet Grubb has opened South Africa’s first all-insect pop-up restaurant.

The newly launched Woodstock-based bug restaurant, aptly named ‘The Insect Experience', offers patrons delicacies such as black-fly-larvae croquettes, mopane polenta, and deep fried dark chocolate black-fly-larvae ice cream.

The meals are designed by chef Mario Barnard, who, according to Business Insider SA, first started cooking with bugs after a trip to Thailand where he was encouraged to eat tarantulas and scorpions.

Barnard says the insects are high in protein and adds nutrition to the dishes.

Gourmet Grubb hopes to encourage people to eat more insects, and products containing insects, as global populations grow and arable land become limited.
