The Twitter-sphere was a-buzz on Monday with the news that veteran broadcaster DJ Fresh would be joining the lineup on commercial radio station 947.

Freshon97 began trending after the news broke that Fresh will host 947’s new drivetime show, Fresh on 947.

DJ Fresh (real name Thato Sikwane) spoke to 702's Azania Mosaka about his new gig:

I wish I was starting today! I love the microphone so much, I love radio so much.

The timing is perfect and I'm ready to make some really fun radio!

DJ Fresh, Drive presenter - 947

I look forward to engaging with my loyal following at my new home, 947. I started my radio career as an afternoon drive presenter and look forward to joining 947 for my new show, in this new timeslot. Listeners can expect a kick-ass team, kick-ass show, a lot of entertainment, laughter and finally being back on radio.

DJ Fresh has been in the game for more than twenty years and as far as radio heavyweights go, he ranks high amongst the best. Fresh loves Joburg as much as we do and we look forward to welcoming the Big Dawg to the afternoon drive microphone at 947.

Thando Makhunga, Station manager - 947

The "Big Dawg" hit the headlines recently when he was let go as the host of "Fresh Breakfast" on Metro FM for his "usage of offensive language on-air".

The SABC claimed his actions had bought the broadcaster into disrepute, however, the decision to let him go was criticised by some fans, many of whom subsequently threatened to boycott the station.

Fresh's new role will begin on Thursday 1 August. He will be joined by co-host Mantsoe Pout, already a familiar voice to 947 listeners.
