We don't know exactly where you're from but, around these parts – Cape Town, that is – brunching is essential part of our lives.
To keep you in the loop, Kfm Crew's Caldine Wyngaard has tried and tested some of the city's best brunch spots – complete with picture-perfect views, a little bit of booze and meals that look so delish, there's no way you can forget to snap a picture for the 'gram.
Walking into Jarryd’s on a crisp winter's morning, feels like walking into the warm and cozy home of close friends...
Welcomed with warm smiles from the minute we walked in, we were seated in a cozy spot in the eatery and, within minutes of ordering, we were served with delicious beverages. I enjoyed a lovely Rooibos cappuccino and, perused the menu, filled with decadent meals made from the freshest ingredients, catering to almost all dietary preferences, including vegan, vegetarian options.
Enjoying the inviting atmosphere, I closed the menu and, finally settled on the recommendation from other diners – Jarryd’s Breakfast Bruschetta – and, it was an absolute hit. Some of the other popular dishes included the colourful smoothie bowls.
Something that really stood out for me, was how receptive the staff were to children in the restaurant. The team goes out of their way to make kids feel comfortable and, would even take them off their parents' hands – literally. It’s not uncommon to see the floor manager, Fidel serving with a child on one hip.
After one or two mimosas, I couldn’t leave without tasting and DEVOURING their beautiful, original pancake stack. If you're looking for an amazing family experience and the coolest vibe, I recommend visiting Jarryd’s.
GRUB & VINE
This is not your everyday brunch spot. The restaurant set up by Chef Matt Manning is one of Cape Town’s hidden gems.
Found in Breë Street, the lofty restaurant is one of a kind. The dining space is a beautifully decorated and well-lit room displaying an array of award-winning local and international wines, while their menu offerings focus more on the local wine industry.
The Brunch Club kicks off at 11:30 every Saturday and booking is essential. It offers 3 different brunch courses, all varying in price and bottomless bubbly to keep the festivities afloat. The menu is seasonal and consists of the freshest and most beautiful ingredients displayed like artwork before you.
Part of the kitchens at Grub & Vine is right in the restaurant so you can take a look directly at how your food is being prepared and plated.
One of the highlights is definitely the cured rainbow trout with candied beetroot and apple combination, an honest flavour explosion. The next course, a roast pork fillet and braised pork neck tasted like the goodness of a home-cooked meal made with the skill of a chef – it was absolutely flawless. Finally, I had my mind and taste buds blown by the banana bread French toast with bacon, honeycomb and some creme fraiche.
If you're looking for the perfect brunch spot for a special occasion, this is it.
Any time of day, any day of the week – this hip, health-conscious vegan restaurant is a surefire way to warm the deepest corners of your heart.
At Scheckter’s Raw, they believe in presenting authentic and honest plant-based foods packed with nutrients and, so beautifully presented you just can’t resist. The menu tells you exactly how the vegan lifestyle impacts the environment and all about the nutritional value that comes with choosing a vegan or a variety of gluten-free options.
If you're wanting to do a meat-free Monday but just can’t resist the taste of a juicy beef burger, try the Scheckters Raw Beyond Burger! No brunch is complete without something sweet, and pumpkin pie flapjacks are just what the doctor ordered. Made from pumpkin purée, almond milk, flour and accompanied by the most delicious vegan cream (made from nuts). Be sure to try their Superfood smoothies, packed with nutrients to kick your body into shape.
If you're in a rush, the restaurant also has a great grab 'n go fridge for fresh goods, plus a large variety of cold-pressed juices and amazing coffee.
What I love about the set up is that, whether you’re eating alone or with a friend – tables can be brought together to make new friends in the light, green space.
FOUR AND TWENTY
Situated in the heart of the bustling Wynberg, this quaint spot is well worth the drive and takes you right in.
Perfect for trying new things, the brunch spot with special mix and match breakfast options is split into 3 segments: the front of house, perfect for a catch-up session or getting work done, the store where you can take a look at all the goodies they sell and an amazing selection of wine and, the courtyard where you can brunch with your favorite furry friend by your side.
The restaurant boasts with various fresh and cooked brunch options but what really gets you is the decadent display of handcrafted cakes, tarts, and delicacies on display.
The cheesecake is a must try as well as the beautiful rooibos, caramel, and honey infused sponge cake! Everything looks too good to eat but don’t let that stop you. The quirky name “shut-up-your-face” peppermint crisp will make you do just that with one bite.
I suggest having your own tea party at Four & Twenty – or selecting your favorites and taking some home for a snack later because you will regret not trying ALL of their sweet treats.
HARVEY'S AT WINCHESTER MANSION
A buffet brunch, complimentary glass of bubbly and some Sunday jazz? Yes, please!
The mood is set by a live jazz band and for those who prefer a good Sunday afternoon read, the Sunday newspaper is up for grabs.
In summer, brunch is served in the beautiful hotel courtyard but in winter, they designate indoor seating with a beautiful panoramic view of the promenade – totally Instagram-worthy, if you ask me.
With Chef Alex and his team preparing the best of breakfast and a Sunday roast, you are spoilt for choice!
Come hungry and make a date to enjoy the delicious Full House SA Breakfast, which includes 2 fried eggs, boerewors, bacon, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. If you're a pescetarian, the menu offers a variety of sushi and fish options. Most importantly, make sure you leave some room for dessert.
