Time in the Saddle is a podcast series hosted by avid cyclist and radio veteran, Ryan O’Connor focusing on all things exciting in the world of cycling. In the sixth episode, Ryan talks all things from buying bicycles during winter to securing sponsorships with cyclists, Chris Willemse Jnr and Hanlie Booyens.
In this week's podcast, Ryan O’Connor and Chris Willemse Jnr are joined by a special guest and cycling pro, Hanlie Booyens to talk about staying active during the winter period, bicycle pedals and buying bicycles on special.
In the market for your first bike? Now is the time to buy it.
With the winter period approaching, novice cyclists can benefit from bicycle specials but, before you make the purchase, make sure you know the difference between clip-in and toe clip systems on road bikes and mountain bikes.
Ryan suggests buying durable pedals, "it doesn't really matter on the road. As soon as you go mountain biking routes, you got to start thinking about the fact that there's a large portion of the time that you spend outdoors on mountain bike trails that the pedals will make contact with hard surfaces like rocks, then you're going to want to consider spending your money wisely on something that's not starter," he explains.
The most expensive or lightest pedal isn't always the right way to go.

Later in the episode, Ryan and Chris chat to Hanlie Booyens about her introduction and journey into professional cycling.
I've always enjoyed being outside and spending time outdoors, so for me, the mountain biking scene was really attractive in that sense.
