Time in the Saddle is a podcast series hosted by avid cyclist and radio veteran, Ryan O’Connor focusing on all things exciting in the world of cycling. In the seventh episode of season two, Ryan and Jason Lind welcome special guests, Achmat 'Shark boy' Hassiem, Simone Godfrey from The Cycle of Life and Stacey-lee Partridge from Ride 4 Skin Cancer.

Kicking off this week's exciting episode, Ryan O'Connor and Jason Lind welcome Achmat 'Shark boy' Hassiem — a South African swimmer who lost hist leg in an attack by a great white shark at Cape Town's Muizenberg beach on 13 August 2006.

Following the attack, Hassiem went on to become a Paralympic swimmer, representing South Africa in Beijing, London and Rio.

This year, the Paralympian swaps his swimwear for cycling short as he joins the Ride4SkinCancer team and prepares to ride in the 41st edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

It's something different from being in the pool... It's something that I live to do, it's part of the bucket list and obviously, this time it's just for a good cause.

Achmat 'Shark boy' Hassiem – Paralympian

At the moment, I train at the Sport Science Institute. I've been on the bike there just, spinning classes... those type of things.

My dad and myself looked at my bike yesterday and we were like – Achmat, this is gonna be a really great challenge for you.

Later in the podcast, Ryan introduces Incentive travel specialist, Simone Godfrey from The Cycle of Life — an organisation started when the rhino crisis was at its peak.

Actually, cycling was not really my thing and I thought, how can we raise some funds. I was challenged and asked, what would be the worst thing for you to do and, I answered to do the Argus. So, I thought... I've lost that bet, I take that challenge on.

Simone Godfrey – The Cycle of Life

I made it under the cut off time... and, we raced, in that first race R50,000.

Simone Godfrey – The Cycle of Life

The Cycle of Life has raised over a million rand for rhino conservation.

Simone Godfrey – The Cycle of Life

What was very interesting for me in some of your presentations that you do with the group was what the money actually gets spent on.

Jason Lind – Olympic Cycles

In its 12th year of raising funds and awareness for skin cancer, Ryan talks to Stacey-lee from Ride 4 Skin Cancer about the work they're doing for Cancer Buddies, charity initiative that was started by a survivor who had benefited from its work.

We're very much endorsing the arm sleeves... Ride 4 Skin Cancer is just a small part of it. We're actually raising funds and awareness for cancer buddies.

Stacey-lee Partridge – Ride 4 Skin Cancer

Thanks again for being a huge inspiration... there's a lot of people with abled-bodies, people that should take a leaf or a feather out of your hat.
