Cape Town has implemented Level 3B water restrictions.

Earlier, Mayor Patricia de Lille stated that water bills increased by R2.54 million over the past 12 months despite restrictions.

She says 20,000 households use 50 kilolitres a month, as opposed to the required 30 kilolitres.

The Mayoral committee recommendation to raise the water restriction level to 3B was put to a vote on Thursday.

Failure to comply with the new restrictions will result in steep fines or have their usage limited to only 350 litres a day.
