The City of Joburg says a proposed lift on water restrictions has not been implemented as of yet.

Minister Nomvula Mokonyane is expected to gazette the changes officially by next week.

On Sunday, Mokonyane opened two sluice gates at the Vaal Dam as water levels reached over 97%.

While recent rainfalls have had a significant impact on the water supply, Nico de Jager, City of Joburg MMC for environment and infrastructure, has urged residents to continue to use water sparingly.

“Before the restrictions, Johannesburg households per capita used 343 litres per residence and we came down because of the restrictions to 289 litres and we really should be striving to see the international standard of 173 litres per resident.”
