DANCE FOR ALL 'STEPPING OUT' TOUR
05 April 2006

After three successful ‘Stepping Out’ Tours, Dance for All will tour once again perform in Swellendam, Montagu, Barrydale and Robertson in April 2006.Under the direction of Philip Boyd and Phyllis Spira, Dance for All (DFA) will launch their 4th ‘Stepping Out’ Tour which will begin with a performance at the Swellendam High School on the 4th April. In true style, Dance for All will showcase a vibrant mix of diverse dance that will incorporate classical ballet, contemporary, African and Spanish styles. Items that will be performed by the newly formed Dance for All Youth Company include Habanera, choreographed by Harold King, Concerto by Allan Kempeneers-Torres and Swing Time, a jazz work by the American choreographer Angela Blackledge, will be performed by the Dance for All outreach students who range from 7 to 16 years of age.

What are the issues facing South African workers today? Come watch internationally acclaimed films like THE TAKE dealing with workers conditions and struggles worldwide. Over 50 internationally guests from Europe, Australia, North & South America, Asia and Africa. The festival is a joint venture between Workers World Media Productions, COSATU Western Cape Region, SACTWU, NEHAWU, FAWU and NUMSA. This is an opportunity for workers and the public to engage critically with local and international union leaders on issues like factory closings, youth issues and unemployment.

DE WET'S DREAM

James Cuningham and Helen Iskander (Fresco Theatre) wield their mastery of directing to create a new physical adventure, delving into the modern day world of cinema and film, set in the olden day world of traditions and small towns. Using the device of two railway workers who tell the tale of De Wet’s Dream, they are making social commentary on a generation of lost souls looking for a better life in the world of movies. De Wet’s Dream is a timeless story of dreams, love and brotherhood. It poses questions such as, How far will you go to follow your imagination? When does a dream become a reality and at what expense?

KFM 94.5 SYMPHONY OF FIRE

Don’t miss the Kfm 94.5 Symphony of Fire - happening at the V&A Waterfront near the Portnet Tower. It's the largest event of its kind on the African continent. Internationally acclaimed pyrotechnics will be displaying the best that their countries have to offer. South Africa, represented by Pyro Spectacular, will fire on Wednesday 29 March, on Saturday 1 April, Spain will present, followed by Canada on the 5 April. The winner will be announced on Saturday, 8 April at the Grand Finale where the highlights of all three shows can be seen. RESIDUE AT INTIMATE THEATRE

The Paper Body Collective will be performing their latest production Residue at the Intimate Theatre, 37 Orange street, from 5 -13 April. Using multimedia, live performance, puppetry and music, Residue takes you on a journey into the deep spaces of feminine memory. Having worked internationally and locally in both puppetry and performance, multimedia director and puppeteer Aja Marneweck has created Residue as part of an intriguing exploration into women’s visual theatre in South Africa. The piece is an intersection of original aural and visual compositions through a collaboration with sound artists (engineer Kriek and west African musician Prince Alfredo) video maker Jacqueline Van Meygaarden and photographer Anthony Strack (Erf 81). Residue has also been invited to perform at the prestigious World festival of Puppetry Art in Prague in June.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS

Cape Town musician Mike McCullagh's show "Myths and Legends" will take centre stage at the V&A Waterfront's Theatre @ The Pavilion from Wednesday, 1 March until the end of May. It’s an African-inspired retro musical featuring reinvented music of the 60’s to 90’s, as well as the sounds of the Fezeka School Choir. You can also book for a buffet dinner before the show. Mike says: "The show weaves together a collection of myths such as the stories of Van Hunks, the Alibama and the modern-day tale of Aquarius, made prominent by legends in the music industry," he adds. "This show is a tribute to musical legends such as Freddie Mercury, John Lennon and Bob Marley and the myths that made them famous". (Wednesday to Saturday) .
