DEREK GRIPPER AT STELLENBOSCH LIBRARY
10 March 2006

Cape Town guitarist Derek Gripper will perform at the Stellenbosch Library in Plein Street on Friday evening at 8pm. With a Masters from the University of Cape Town, Derek has studied with some of the world’s top classical guitarists, such as Odair Assad, Carlos Bonnell, and most recently with Grammy Award nominee Paul Galbraith in Brazil. In his two CD releases, "Sagtevlei" (with Alex van Heerden) and "Blomdoorns" (solo 8-string guitar), Derek has explored the evocative sounds of the Western Cape, transforming the music of the Boland with his unique use of guitar and subtle vocal shadings. He will play his own music as well as a transcription of Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin, and Bach’s Prelude, Fugue and Allegro. He will also play some well-known works for classical guitar by composers such as Takemitsu, de Falla, and Benjamin Britten on a guitar by world-famous luthier Hermann Hauser III.

The Peninsula School Feeding Association will be holding its first major fundraiser of the year, their Annual Golf Day, at the Mowbray Golf Club, on Friday 10th March. This year PSFA will be feeding almost 145 000 underprivileged primary and high school children in schools in the Metropolitan area. KAROO KITAAR BLUES
03 March 2006 - 11 March 2006

3, 4, 9, 10, 11 March 2006 David Kramer will headline the show Karoo Kitaar Blues at the Spier Amphitheatre from the 3rd to the 11th of March at 8pm. The show is the product of Kramer’s musical journey into the heart of the Karoo and Namaqualand where he encountered eccentric musicians with a unique variety of music. He now shares the stage with them and it promises to be an unique musical experience. Karoo Kitaar Blues is described as a wholly South African production, which will elicit laughter and tears simultaneously. The show is complemented with songs from David’s most recent CD Huistoe. Joining the band will be the Sonskyn Susters.

Love, deceit and fate are all part of the intriguing Victorian costume drama “The Day after the Fair”. It’s based on a short story by Thomas Hardy, adapted for the stage by Frank Harvey, and will run at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg, from Friday the 10th to th 18th of March. “The Day after the Fair” is set on the West Coast of England in the late nineteenth century. ROLLING HEADS

Award-winning writer, Andrew Whaley's greatly anticipated play “Rolling Heads” will run at the Old Zoo on the Rhodes Memorial Estate from the 10th of March until the 1st of April. Set against the background of violent evictions and slum clearance during the winter of 2005, this dramatic story derives its power and humour from the chaos that forces two desperadoes to escape underground to freedom in South Africa. Along the way they have to deal with home and the heart, pitfalls, presidents and municipal accidents. It is a dramatic and hilarious journey that guarantees a meeting with destiny! MYTHS AND LEGENDS

Cape Town musician Mike McCullagh's show "Myths and Legends" will take centre stage at the V&A Waterfront's Theatre @ The Pavilion from Wednesday, 1 March until the end of May. It’s an African-inspired retro musical featuring reinvented music of the 60’s to 90’s, as well as the sounds of the Fezeka School Choir. You can also book for a buffet dinner before the show. Mike says: "The show weaves together a collection of myths such as the stories of Van Hunks, the Alibama and the modern-day tale of Aquarius, made prominent by legends in the music industry," he adds. "This show is a tribute to musical legends such as Freddie Mercury, John Lennon and Bob Marley and the myths that made them famous". (Wednesday to Saturday) .
