LA ROSA SPANISH DANCE THEATRE COMMUNITY SHOW
21 March 2006

La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre will present excerpts from two of their highly acclaimed shows, Colores del Cabo (Colours of the Cape) and Flamenco Puro (Pure Flamenco) at two community venues this month. Rhythm forms the pulse that runs through cultures throughout the world and Colores del Cabo, choreographed by Carolina Rosa, the Artisitic Director of La Rosa, is an exploration into the rhythms of the Cape that celebrates the rich cultural diversity of the region. By reviving street games and songs that have been sung by past generations from all cultures, this piece that will be performed by children from the community together with professionals, combines song and dance interpreted through flamenco rhythms. La Rosa aims to bring about an awareness of this aspect of the Cape’s cultural heritage amongst children and adults alike by using the rhythmic tools of flamenco. Working with the children participating in La Rosa’s development initiatives in Gugulethu (Likwezi) and Elsies River (ComArt) the musicians and dancers from La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre’s Company and Trainee Company will perform songs in Xhosa sung by Nolufefe Mtchabe, English and Afrikaans songs from the Cape Flats and the Bo-Kaap. Flamenco Puro, the second presentation, is an exciting and dynamic flamenco work that is particularly well suited to a smaller venue and it showcases the talented La Rosa artists in a familiar style of Spanish dance that is both powerful and passionate in its delivery. The dancers will be joined by a musical ensemble, led by Bienyameen on guitar. He will be accompanied by Roberto San Juan on percussion (cajon) and Nicole Holm on vocals.

7TH SON GIG
15 March 2006 - 22 March 2006

For a skanking combination of beer and reggae beats, you must not miss Cape Town roots rockers, 7th Son, at Paulaner Bräuhaus. They’re live and kicking every Wednesday in March between 8 and 10pm and admission is free. This band has been described as “the pride and joy of Cape Town’s reggae/ska/dub music scene” but whether you’re a reggae fundi or a dub virgin – the rhythm is gonna getcha. While the band plays on, Paulaner is offering a large glass of its own, brewed-on-the-premises, unmissable beer for the price of a small one. Paulaner is a genuine German microbrewery (with a genuine German master-brewer) at the heart of the Waterfront’s cosmopolitan vibe. Believed to be the only microbrewery in the world below sea level, it’s certainly the only one in a working harbour. It makes Bavarian Weissbier, smooth Paulaner Lager and Münch’ner Dunkel, the dark beer for which Munich is renowned. There’s a water-side beer garden to sit in – until the band gets you on your feet – and plenty of excellent Bavarian fare to give you the energy to keep dancing. So …get on down. Every Wednesday March 8,15,22, 29 Paulaner Brauhaus - V&A Waterfront, Clocktower 8 – 10pm Free admission.

17 March 2006 - 25 March 2006

In 1978, Tafelberg Publishers published Die Swerfjare van Poppie Nongena written by Elsa Joubert. It was later adapted for the stage by Sandra Kotze. Through Poppie's eyes we journey into her and her family's nightmare experiences during the horrific political turmoil of South Africa in the 1970's.Sandra Temmingh, director of this UCT Drama Department Production says; "For our students this piece of theatre is very close to their hearts. All of them have a 'Poppie' in their families - a woman who, for the survival and education of her children, would struggle and fight with all her worth. The talented young actors through their research into the play, found a new sense of respect for their parents and grandparents as they discovered the horrors of the implications of the terrible pass laws in place in the 70's".

ASWOESTERTJIE – ‘N PANTOMINI (SONDAE)
19 March 2006 - 26 March 2006

JODY ABRAHAMS IN ‘IS JA!’
21 March 2006 - 31 March 2006

Jody Abrahams’s one-man show ‘Is Ja!’ is back in Cape Town and you can catch it at Obz Café until the 31st at 8pm. Is Ja! is a roller-coaster ride that uses music and song to tell the sometimes sad, often hilarious, yet always truthful account of Abrahams’ life thus far. In his quest to illustrate the triumphs as well as the heartaches he encountered during his career’s rapid ascendancy, Abrahams takes on the personas of other characters to share his intensely personal story. Written by the talented Johannesburg playwright, Stephen Simm, ‘Is Ja! gives audiences insight into the sometimes bizarre industry called showbiz and allows Abrahams to express his versatility both as an actor and singer. In this run, Abrahams uses more music and a refined musical score to illustrate his story. This ranges from local musical hits to traditional Cape-Malay Medleys. Swing to Afrikaanse liedjies. Rock to Broadway classics. And pop to hip-hop. Abrahams’ own compositions are also featured in the musical score.

Along the way they have to deal with home and the heart, pitfalls, presidents and municipal accidents. It is a dramatic and hilarious journey that guarantees a meeting with destiny! Heartfelt and funny, Rolling Heads brings together the superb comic gifts of Adam Neill as director, with actors Dylan Wilson-Max and Tembinkosi Njokweni, and Nicholas Ellenbogen as production designer.
