Bel Porto, a school for children with special needs in Lansdowne, will be hosting their annual school fete this Saturday to raise funds. Attractions will include a South African Navy demonstration and Dog Show, a martial arts display, a magic show, a talent show, live bands, dance troops, a jumping castle and fun games for the family. Stalls will be selling 2nd hand clothing, bric-a-brac, books and toys & food. There will also be a tea garden and more.

The Mushroom Festival 2006 will be on from the 3rd until the 19th of March. To celebrate chefs all over South Africa have been briefed to create a special ‘Mushroom Menu’ using Fresh Cultivated Mushrooms as the star ingredient. On Saturday chefs will also be preparing mushroom dishes for the public to taste on the V&A Waterfront Market Square from 12 noon onwards. Wine will be served during the day to add to the flavours of the mushroom cuisine – all this will be done in aid of the Solomons Haven charity. A minimum donation of R5 will be charged at the gate to all those interested in tantalizing their taste buds while supporting a good cause! The participating restaurants will be listed on the official Mushroom Festival website, www.mushroominfo.co.za as well as on the South African Chefs Association site www.saca.co.za.

It will be on at the Baxter Theatre Centre this Saturday, as well as next week Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday The CPO is collaborating with Cape Town Opera and Norrlands Operan, to bring this seldom-performed, but beautiful opera to the South African stage. South African conductor Chris Dowdeswell and Peter Valentovic will share the podium to conduct the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Swedish stars Elizabet Strid, Jan Kyhle, Susanna Levonen and Lars Marthinsson will share centre stage with young South African singers Otto Maidi, Miranda Tini, Shirley Sutherland, Violina Anguelov, Nobulumko Mngxekeza and Nokrismesi Skota. Sung in Czech with English surtitles, Rusalka will be directed by Swedish director Staffan Aspegren. Based on the fairy tale of The Little Mermaid, Rusalka tells of a young working class girl who aspires to rise above her class. She falls in love with a prince and her dreams come true – but at a high price… A talk on Rusalka will be given 45 minutes before curtain-up of each performance in Room C6 at the UCT College of Music. Locals and holiday makers can look for ward to the Annual Kalk Bay Fish Fare to take place on Saturday the 4th of March at the Holy Trinity Church. Visitors are invited to join the local community for this culinary event that has been built up over many years. Traditional seafood – from calamari curry to delicious yellowtail will be on offer. There will also be stalls and entertainment. Prices are reasonable and there are wonderful prizes to be won! On the menu: Enjoy fresh-from-the-sea braaied Yellow Tail, fried fish and chips, delicious fish cakes, mussels, oysters, salmon treats and calamari cooked while you wait! Boeriwors and bacon rolls will also be available. Homemade desserts and ice cream to follow. Beer, wine and cool drinks will be served. You can now go and harvest your own Hanepoot grapes at De Krans Winery in Calitzdorp. It's all in aid of Vygieshof Old Age Home. Grapes are sold at R3.00 a kilo and cardboard containers can be bought at R4.00 each, or bring your own containers. Scissors will be provided. On Wednesdays and Saturdays braaivleis will be served between 11 am and 2 pm. Meals include a good sized chop , boerewors, 3 salads, roosterkoek, freshly baked bread and home made jams for 'n meagre R35.00 per person. Light meals will also be available. The meals are part of Vygieshof Old Age Homes' fundraising effort. Bookings are essential and a deposit is payable for groups of more than ten.

3, 4, 9, 10, 11 March 2006 David Kramer will headline the show Karoo Kitaar Blues at the Spier Amphitheatre from the 3rd to the 11th of March at 8pm. The show is the product of Kramer’s musical journey into the heart of the Karoo and Namaqualand where he encountered eccentric musicians with a unique variety of music. He now shares the stage with them and it promises to be an unique musical experience.
